Patterns Game is New Minecraft

Or at least it could have been.

I see a ton of Minecraft style games coming out, and now we have a very interesting one in the works called Patterns. I found out about this game through Second Life's homepage. Yes, the Second Life creators are making this game. It looks like a more creative game focusing on, well, patterns. From what I understand, you build a world out of a single shape primitive, the triangle. Even your character is a bunch of Triforce pieces!

Personally, I do not get into these game as much as you would expect, but I understand the desire to build. After all, I make my own games. I played Terraria a lot, more so than Steam claims I did. I loved Terraria's music and graphical style. I got a strange satisfaction from digging tunnels in Terraria. Therefore, Patterns, at first glance, interests me.

What is FOSS? Why should anyone support it?

TLDR: FOSS FTW!


FOSS is short form of Free Open Source Software. At this point, you may be thinking, "Wait, isn't open source always free?" The answer is simply no. Free is a relative term and can have multiple meanings depending on what context it is used in. In the case of open source projects, you are always free to openly share the source code, but that is the only right you are definitely permitted. Free open source refers to another set of rights, the freedom to redistribute commercial products based on the open source project. It also means being free of viral licensing requirements, like being obligated to share the source code of something that is based on an open source project.
