Dunning Kruger Effect
Tue, 02 Apr 2013, by Syrsly
I found out what it's called when an inferior worker thinks they have above average skills. Thanks by the way, Wikipedia. I learned something today because of you. And of course, thank you, too, Google. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a "cognitive bias" (or what I would call just 'bias') over your own work that makes other people's work seem inferior, even when their work could be better than your own. I wonder if it is even possible to know when you are biased in this way. If you realized how biased you were, would you admit it?
I hope I am not biased toward my own work, because I stand to improve on my own work through the work of others. That applies to both art and code. I take pride in my accomplishments, so maybe I am biased, but I do not think I am. I try to acknowledge the work of others whenever I am browsing DeviantArt and complement others quite often, but in my subconscious, maybe I'm biased in some small way toward my own work. Perhaps you are also biased. Perhaps we all are.
